Bayer 0-1 Wolfsburg: Baku’s strike helps Wolfsburg with an important away win

Ridle Baku-Wolfsburg

Leverkusen’s title ambitions have taken another hit after a narrow defeat against Wolfburg.

Bayer Leverkusen have suffered another setback in the Bundesliga title race following the 1-0 defeat against Wolfsburg.

Leverkusen were coming off a win against Dortmund and deemed the favourites to win the contest.

It was evident when the home side dominated the opening minutes, with in-form striker Lucas Alario had his header hitting the post.

But Wolfsburg were the one to take the lead after Ridle Baku netted a header, benefiting from Renato Steffen’s cross before the half-time.

The visitors decided to sit back and cede possession to Leverkusen in the second half. Everything fell into the place of Wolfsburg as the home side struggled to breach through their compact defence. Perhaps, Baku’s strike remained the only goal of the game as Wolves sealed three points to go to the fourth in the Bundesliga table. The win was also a sigh of relief for Wolfsburg after not picking a win in any of their last three games.

Elsewhere, Leverkusen’s struggles have been manifest of late despite last week’s win against Dortmund.

It all started from the defeat against Bayern Munich as Peter Bosz’s side have only won one of their last four games despite being dominant from the start.

Leverkusen are currently third in the table with 32 points and appear to be slipping up their opportunities to challenge Bayern for the Bundesliga title. They will face RB Leipzig in their next fixture.
