Leverkusen 2-1 Dortmund: Florian Wirtz’s late winner gets Leverkusen back to winning ways

Dortmund 4-0 Schalke - Dortmund resume their campaign with a bang

Wirtz cancels out Dortmund star Julian Brandt’s equaliser in an exciting Bundesliga contest

Bayer Leverkusen have finally put an end to their purple patch by edging out Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at home, with Florian Wirtz scoring a late winner.

The odds were against Leverkusen as they hadn’t won any of their last four games and Dortmund were also coming on the back of a disappointing draw against Mainz.

However, Moussa Diaby’s goal, latched on to the longball from Leon Bailey before firing his shot into the nets, must have provided Leverkusen with a much-needed sigh of relief.

Perhaps, Diaby posed a serious threat to the Black and Yellow after creating numerous goal-scoring chances.

Dortmund responded with an equaliser in the 66th minute as Julian Brandt scored a brilliant goal with his right foot, leaving no chance for Hradecky.

The German playmaker could have netted another one if it weren’t for Edmond Tapsoba’s vital goal-line clearance,

Leverkusen later stunned Dortmund with a later winner and the scorer was teenager Florian Wirtz. The hosts caught Die Borussen on the break and Wirtz, who was in the acres of space, was fed by Bailey. The 17-year-old unleashed a shot to beat Roman Burki.

Wirtz’s strike made the difference as Leverkusen jumped to second in the Bundesliga table while sharing the same points (32) as Leipzig.

Dortmund have been fluctuating under Terzic as they are currently clinging on to the fourth position in the table.
