Leverkusen 2-2 Mainz: Bender error hands visitors a point, despite Alario, Schick goals

Sven Bender-Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw against Mainz in the Bundesliga earlier tonight.

Lucas Alario scored the opening goal of the game on the 14th minute after the South American was picked out inside the Mainz box by Moussa Diaby with a low cross.

Karim Onisiwo had a great chance to score the equalizer for Mainz with a free header but he failed to hit the target.

Leverkusen were the better team in the first half and they dominated proceedings after taking the lead.

The likes of Kerem Deiraby could have doubled Leverkusen’s advantage but his shot was saved by Zentner.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Lucas Hradecky was taken off at the stroke of half time and Niklas Lomb did well to keep Mainz in check during the second half.

The Leverkusen keeper did well to deny the likes of Leandro Barreiro and Moussa Niakhate.

Niakhate managed to score for the away side but his goal was ruled offside because of a handball.

Leverkusen had a goal disallowed as well after Demarai Gray managed to put the ball into the net after a handball from Patrick Schick.

The Czech Republic striker did manage to make amends on the 84th minute with Leverkusen’s second goal of the game. He managed to slot the ball past Zentner’s legs and Leverkusen seemed in cruise control after that.

Robert Glatzel brought the away side back into the game on the 89th minute with his first Bundesliga goal and Stoger levelled things up in added time to secure a point for Mainz.

The away side are in the relegation battle right now and tonight’s point against Bayer Leverkusen could prove to be hugely important for them.

It will be interesting to see if they can improve in the coming weeks and beat the drop this season.
