Champions League: Inter held to a goalless draw by Shakhtar Donetsk

Lautaro Martinez-Inter Milan

The Nerazzurri have dropped points for the second game in a row in Champions League

Inter Milan have played out a goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk, a week after they picked up a draw against Gladbach in the opening day of the Champions League group stage.

It is still surprising to see this scoreline for what they have done to dominate this game.

The first half itself saw plenty of chances went begging for the visitors as Romelu Lukaku and Martinez were unlucky in front of the goal.

Nicolo Barella had twice his chances turned down by the woodwork meanwhile Romelu Lukaku had his own when his effort from the free-kick got denied by the post right before the half time.

Martinez missed out an easy chance to put Inter ahead in the second half after firing his shot wide despite an empty net.

Shakhtar came lively in the final stages and they almost stunned the Serie A giants. The Ukrainians caught Inter napping in their defensive third when Ashley Young back passed a header to Samir Handanovic. Tete was there to pounce on the mistake but he decided to square off a pass to Marlos when he had the chance to go at the goal on his own. The pass was eventually cut out by De Vrig.

Inter have now picked up back to back draws in the Champions League group stage this season and Antonio Conte would be rueing over the missed opportunities against Shakhtar.

On the other hand, Shakhtar are off to a dream start to their Champions League campaign following their win against Real Madrid last week and now a draw against Serie A giants.
