Holstein Kiel pull off a major upset as Bayern Munich crash out of DFB Pokal

Bayern Munich crash out of DFB Pokal

Bayern Munich crashed out of the DFB Pokal after a defeat to Holstein Kiel earlier tonight.

Serge Gnabry managed to put Bayern Munich in the lead early on the 14th minute after a mistake by Gelios.

The Holstein keeper pushed Thomas Muller’s header into Gnabry’s path and he managed to convert despite being offside.

Thomas Muller could have doubled Bayern Munich’s advantage a few minutes later but he missed the target from 6 yards out.

Holstein got back into the game when Fin Bartels raced clean through on goal and slotted it past Manuel Neuer on the 37th minute.

The German international was beaten once again a few minutes later by Lee Jae-Sung but the goal was ruled out because of offside.

The German champions went ahead within two minutes of the second half when Leroy Sane curled in a sublime free-kick from 25 yards out.

Holstein forced extra time with a stoppage-time goal from Hauke Wahl.

Bayern had the chances to win the game in added time as well when the likes of Joshua Kimmich hit the crossbar and Alphonso Davies had a long-range effort saved.

The away side picked up a stunning win in the penalty shootout to cause one of the major upsets in the history of the competition. Lewandowski, Kimmich, Muller, David Alaba and Douglas Costa had all scored from the spot but Roca was denied by the Holstein keeper.

Hansi Flick will be thoroughly disappointed with the way his team have crashed out of the competition and Bayern will be desperate to bounce back when they return to Bundesliga action against Freiburg on Sunday.
