Barcelona line up January move for Chelsea centre-back

Barcelona appointed Ronald Koeman as new manager

The out of favour Chelsea defender is reportedly in the wishlist of Ronald Koeman.

Barcelona are interested in signing Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger as Ronald Koeman continues to contemplate over the defensive reinforcements.

According to reports, Barcelona are eyeing a January move for Rudiger, who has seemingly gone down the pecking order of Frank Lampard.

It is also added that Rudiger’s arrival would be facilitated to the Nou Camp if fringe defender Samuel Umtiti leaves in January. The French centre-back is said to be not in the plans of Koeman while Barca have placed him in the transfer exchange.

Barca continue to get linked with Manchester City defender Eric Garcia, who turns out to be the number one target of the Dutch manager. However, the Catalan club are still struggling to strike a deal with Man City for the transfer of Garcia and there are higher possibilities that Barca could opt to sign him for free when his contract expires next summer.

In such a case, Koeman would prefer to add Rudiger to Barca’s defensive ranks alongside Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet.

Rudiger hasn’t started in any of the Premier League games this season, with Frank Lampard preferring Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma in the defence.

The German centre-back had been linked with a move to PSG and Tottenham during the summer transfer window after the Blues decided to sell him.

It remains to be seen whether Barca would go all out for Garcia in the winter transfer window or would make a stopgap signing like Rudger to strengthen the defence.
