Huesca 1-2 Real Madrid: Varane inspires Madrid to a come-back win

Raphael Varane-Real Madrid

The French defender scored a double in the second half including a late winner.

Raphael Varane put on a match-winning performance as the French defender’s brace helped Real Madrid edge out Huesca 2-1 in an important La Liga fixture.

Zinedine Zidane cut a frustrated figure prior to the game as the French manager hit out at the reporters when asked about Madrid’s poor run of form.

Having been knocked out of Copa del Rey followed by a disappointing defeat in their previous La Liga fixture against Levante, the Spanish capital club were desperate for a win entering into the game against relegation-bound Huesca.

The hosts took a shock lead through Javi Galan as soon as the second half commenced and when everyone thought Madrid would derail, Varane came to the rescue.

The French World Cup winner scored a brace which included the winner in the 84th minute to help his side complete a come-back.

Varane has received more criticism of late due to his inconsistency but today’s display would have handed him much confidence going forward.

The win also allowed the defending La Liga champions to move ahead of Barcelona and close the gap on the leaders and local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Zidane had earlier stated that Madrid would continue fighting till the end regardless of their recent run of form and it will be interesting to see whether they can build on today’s win. They will face Getafe in their next fixture on Wednesday.
