Real Madrid 2-0 Getafe: Benzema, Mendy goals help Madrid close gap with Atletico

Karim Benzema-Real Madrid

The French duo was on the score sheet to provide an important win against Getafe.

Real Madrid subdued sturdy Getafe 2-0 at home to get back into the La Liga title race.

Madrid were fresh off a thrilling win against Huesca – one which put an end to their brief rough patch – and the contest against Javier Bordalas’ side was deemed rather tough.

Both the teams failed to find the scoresheet in the first half, with Getafe opting to sit deep and allow Los Blancos to have more possession. Luka Modric came close to finding the opener before his shot was denied by David Soria.

However, Madrid were officially 1-0 after Karim Benzema netted a goal from Vinicius’ cross around the hour mark. Left-back Ferland Mendy doubled the lead minutes later to provide Madrid with an important win.

Los Blancos have secured back to back wins and closed the gap to five points with leaders Atletico Madrid.

Benzema has been productive of late for Madrid and he is currently fifth in the La Liga scoring charts with 11 goals.

Apart from the goals, Marvin Parker’s first-team debut with Madrid caught the attention of many. Zinedine Zidane handed the Spanish talent his first start with the senior team after the French man ran out of options due to the long list of injuries.

The defending Spanish champions await Valencia this weekend before they take on Atalanta in the Champions League.
