Lille 2-0 Marseille: Late goals from Jonathan David send the hosts two points clear at the top

Jonathan David-Lille

Lille picked up a 2-0 win over Marseille in the French Ligue 1 earlier tonight.

The home side were firm favourites heading into the game and they were completely dominant from start to finish.

Striker Jonathan David put on an exceptional display for the hosts and score both goals of the game in the dying moments.

David opened the scoring on the 90th minute for his side and then wrapped up the three points with another goal in added time.

The win takes Lille two points clear at the top of the French League table. They have 62 points from 28 matches, ahead of defending champions PSG in second place.

The home side enjoyed the lion’s-share of possession with 61% and it is no surprise that they were comfortable against Marseille throughout the game.

Lille could have easily scored more goals on another day and they had eight shots on target compared to just one from the visitors.

The home side will be hoping to increase their lead at the top of the table in the coming weeks with similar performances and it remains to be seen if they can go all the way and win the French League title this season.

Meanwhile Marseille are eighth in the table having won just one of their last five League games.

The club is already in a crisis and it will be interesting to see if Jorge Sampaoli can turn things around for the French outfit in the coming weeks.
