Aston Villa crash to second consecutive defeat after 3-4 thriller against Southampton

Danny Ings-Southampton

Aston Villa crashed to a 4-3 defeat against Southampton in the Premier League earlier today.

Jannik Vestergaard scored the opening goal of the game on the 20th minute and James Ward-Prowse added a brace before half time to make it 3-0 to the away side.

Danny Ings scored around the hour mark to give Southampton an unassailable lead.

However, Aston Villa managed to mount a come back in the second half. Tyrone Mings scored their first goal on the 62nd minute and then Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish scored twice in injury time to make it 4-3.

However the away side held on for the three points eventually and Aston Villa will be thoroughly disappointed with their performance at home.

The home side were under pressure to win here after their defeat against Leeds United and it will be interesting to see if the two consecutive defeats affect their morale negatively in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa have started the season in fine form but they have lost their momentum now and they will have to work hard to get back to winning ways.

As far as Southampton are considered, they picked up an impressive win at Everton and the win over Aston Villa today will have given them immense confidence.

It will be interesting to see if they can build on this and go on a winning run now.

Southampton have now made their best start to the Premier League after seven matches since 2014 and the defeat sees Aston Villa dropped down to 6th in the table now.
