Borussia Mönchengladbach slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Mainz in the Bundesliga earlier tonight.

The away side took the lead on the 10th minute through Onisiwo but Gladbach did well to come back into the game soon after.

Lars Stindl scored the equalizer for the home side on the 26th minute and Gladbach did their best to take the lead before the stroke of half time. Alassane Plea and Lazaro had the chances to put the home side ahead.

Mainz managed to contain the home side after conceding the first goal and the two sides went into half time on level terms.

Both teams continued to fight for a winning goal and Gladbach will be disappointed to have missed a few chances to take the lead in the second half.

Despite dominating possession, the home side struggled to create too many clear cut chances. Leandro Barreiro almost put the visitors ahead early on in the second half.

Mainz scored the winning goal of the game four minutes from time and the away side will be delighted with the result tonight. Stoger scored in the 86th minute to secure all three points for the visitors.

They were the underdogs heading into the game but they’ve managed to grind out a vital win away from home and it will be interesting to see if they can build on this in the coming weeks now.

Today’s win could prove to be vital for Mainz in the relegation battle and they are 17th in the table. They are now within one point of Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation play-off spot.

Meanwhile, Gladbach have dropped down to 8th in the League table and they will have to improve a lot in the coming weeks if they want to secure European qualification this season.
