Man United eye summer swoop for Real Madrid centre-back.

Manchester United have identified Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane as their priority signing next summer.

According to reports, United have made the French defender their no.1 target in 2021 alongside RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

Man Utd tried to sign Varane during Jose Mourinho’s reign but the transfer never happened.

Varane continues to be the staple of Los Blancos’ defence for a long time alongside Sergio Ramos.

The 27-year-old joined Madrid in 2011 and went on to become one of the best centre-backs in Europe while winning several trophies in the process.

The French World Cup winner has his contract running until 2022 but talks regarding the extension haven’t begun.

Varane came under fire when he produced an erratic performance against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals months ago. Nonetheless, he played a big role for Zinedine Zidane’s side to win the La Liga title last season.

United are also keeping tabs on Varane’s compatriot Upamecano, who they failed to sign in the recent window. The 21-year-old has a release clause worth £36m, which becomes active next year.

Furthermore, both the defenders have reportedly demanded that United should retain their Champions League spot at the end of this season.

The Red Devils’ defensive woes were exposed following the 6-1 defeat against Spurs at home. They also had conceded four goals in their previous games in the league, a total of 10 in 3 games.

The centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have been questioned about their form while Eric Bailly produced a stinker against Spurs.
