Newcastle United eyeing January move for Mitchel Bakker

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing the Bayer Leverkusen defender Mitchel Bakker.

According to a report from Daily Mail, the German club signed the Dutch defender for a fee of around £8.5 million last summer, and he has been quite impressive for them so far.

Newcastle are looking to snap him up this month, and they are prepared to pay a premium for his services.

The magpies have improved defensively with the signing of Kieran Trippier, and they are looking to improve on the other flank as well. It will be interesting to see if they can sign the young Dutchman before the transfer window closes.

The Premier League side certainly have the finances to pull off the transfer, but it remains to be seen whether Leverkusen are prepared to let the player leave after just a few months of joining the club.

Furthermore, selling the player midway through the season could weaken the squad and disrupt the German club’s plans for the season.

The report further states that Newcastle are hoping to sign the Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this week in a deal worth around £30 million.

The Premier League side are currently 19th in the league table, and they will be desperate to beat relegation this season.

It is no secret that Newcastle are lacking in multiple departments across the pitch, and they will have to strengthen the squad significantly in order to finish the season strongly.

The chance to move to the Premier League could be a tempting proposition for the young Dutchman, but a January move seems unlikely at this stage.

Newcastle have a talented young left-back on their books in Jamal Lewis, but the youngster has struggled to live up to the expectations since his move from Norwich City, and the Premier League side will have to bring in someone who can make an immediate impact.

Bakker has shown his quality in the Bundesliga, and there is no doubt that he has the potential to succeed in English football as well.
