Summer signings impress as Pogba’s future hangs in the balance at Man United

Manchester United picked up a comfortable win over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League last night and Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer can be delighted with some of the performances from his players.

Summer signing Edinson Cavani was allowed to lead the line for Manchester United and the Uruguayan striker did well to hold up the play and bring others into the game.

His link-up play with the Manchester United midfielders was quite impressive and it helped the likes of Rashford and Martial get in behind the defence and create more opportunities for their side.

Cavani did well to occupy the defenders with his movement and it opened up gaps for the likes of Martial and Rashford to exploit.

Manchester United were without Luke Shaw for this game and Alex Telles was given a chance to prove himself. The Brazilian left-back put on a solid display at the back and he was quite impressive going forward as well.

It will be interesting to see if he can establish himself as a regular starter ahead of the England defender in the coming weeks.

The stand out performer on the night was Bruno Fernandes who managed to score a stunning brace.

Solskjaer decided to try out Van de Beek in a midfield two with Fred last night and the Dutchman certainly justified his selection. He was disciplined and composed in possession and he helped Manchester United create chances with his incisive passing and movement.

Last night’s performance shows that Van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes can operate in the same midfield without affecting the balance of the squad.

It will be interesting to see if the Dutchman can now hold down a regular starting berth. His display last night will have certainly sent out warning signs to the underperforming Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman will have to improve immensely if he wants to hold on to his starting berth at Manchester United this season.
