Brighton 1-1 Liverpool: Maupay missed from spot; Salah, Mane denied

Diogo Jota-Liverpool

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton in the premier league earlier today.

The Reds had to field a severely weakened lineup due to the fixture congestion and the injury issues at hand, and they struggled to find a way past Brighton.

Liverpool were lucky not to concede early on in the game when Neal Maupay missed a penalty.

Mohamed Salah managed to give Liverpool the lead soon after but the Egyptian forward was adjudged offside, and the goal was overturned.

Jurgen Klopp was without three of his first-choice defenders and two of his starting midfielders. Sadio Mane was on the bench as well, and the Reds struggled to control the game as a result of that.

Despite having the ball, the Premier League champions did not manage to create too many chances, and they lacked craft and imagination in the centre of the park.

Diogo Jota gave the Reds their lead around the hour mark, but Liverpool were undone by a late penalty awarded to Brighton.

Pascal Gross scored deep into injury time to secure a point for the home side.

Sadio Mane was also denied a goal, as VAR adjudged him offside.

The Reds have now missed a glorious opportunity to pull clear in the title race especially with Chelsea and Tottenham facing each other in the Premier League on Sunday.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can get some of their key players back from injury in their next game.

The Reds will certainly need some luck in order to retain the Premier League title this season, and it will be interesting to see if their injury issues start to ease over the next few weeks.
