Milan 2-0 Fiorentina: Romagnoli, Kessie on scoresheet; Milan ensured top spot

Alessio Romangnoli- AC Milan

AC Milan continued their brilliant start to the season on Sunday by winning two-nil against Fiorentina in Serie A.

In a weekend where title rivals Juventus dropped points, the hosts maintained their unbeaten start to the season and making in two wins from the last two League games.

The visitors, though organised, were punished by for a few lapses in concentration at the back, which proved decisive on the overall play of the night. Milan to their credit took their chances, but they could have scored even more with Kessie missing a second spot-kick of the day.

The league leaders who were without Zlatan Ibrahimović missing through a hamstring injury in their last league game were two goals ahead in the first half through Alessio Romagnoli and Franck Kessie.

Milan opened the scoring through captain Alessio Romagnoli who headed home a Franck Kessie flick-on in the box following a Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner in the 17th minute. It was a moment of defensive sloppiness from Fiorentina who had left the Milan captain unmarked at the back-post.

Their misery was compounded in the night when another defensive error led to a Milan penalty in the 27th minute, after German Pezzella clumsily brought down Alexis Saelemaekers in the area.

Kessie scored from the resulting spot-kick, sending Bartlomiej Dragowski the wrong way.

After the break, the hosts had another opportunity to add to the scoreline when Martín Cáceres was penalised for a shove on Théo.

Kessie stepped up once again to take it, but this time, Bartłomiej Drągowski guessed correctly to deny the Ivorian.

Fiorentina had an opportunity to halve the deficit, but Donnarumma was able to save Franck Ribery’s effort.

The win took Milan five points ahead of their cousins Inter Milan. They are back in action on Thursday in the Europa League, while Fiorentina will welcome Genoa on Saturday.
