Napoli 0-2 Sassuolo: Second-half goals from Locatelli, Lopez sees off Napoli

David Ospina-Napoli

Sassuolo have picked up a shocking away win against Napoli.

Sassuolo have beaten Napoli 2-0 at Stadio Olimpico, extending their winning streak in Serie A.

Napoli were presented with a wonderful opportunity in the first half due to a sloppy pass from the defender. Victor Osimhen pounced on it but was eventually denied by goalkeeper Consigli. Osimhen has had a relatively quiet game as his complacency in the final third proved costly.

The second half saw both sides dominate the proceedings for a while before Sassuolo won a penalty. Manuel Locatelli slotted the ball to the nets, sending Ospina the wrong direction, to put Sassuolo head.

Dries Mertens had his shot denied by the crossbar from the free-kick as Napoli kept on knocking the doors at Sassuolo, but none could prevent them from losing the game. Maxime Lopez scored the winning goal in the stoppage time for the visitors. The goal was also his first for Sassuolo in this season.

Napoli were handed their second defeat of the season with the first one being a forfeit defeat against Juventus.

Meanwhile, the win has sent Sassuolo to second in the Serie A table, trailing Milan by two points.

The Partenopei manager Gennaro Gattuso also reflected on the defeat as well as the penalty incident.

“We had many chances, we didn’t convert them, we could’ve done more and there’s no point standing here talking about whether it was a penalty or not. That’s the way they saw it, we have to focus on the game.”
