Roma appoint ‘The Special One’ Jose Mourinho as their manager – Reactions

Jose Mourinho-AS Roma

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the manager of Roma.

The Portuguese manager was recently sacked by Tottenham Hotspur after a disappointing run of results, and it will be interesting to see if he can bounce back strongly in Italy next season.

Roma has coached in the Italian League before with Inter Milan, and he was massively successful. He helped the Italian side win the Scudetto and the Champions League.

Mourinho will be expected to guide Roma to winning ways as well. He will take over at the end of this season, and Paulo Fonseca is set to depart.

Roma are currently 7th in the league table, and they are unlikely to qualify for European football next season.

The Italian outfit had not won a trophy since 2008, and they have been quite disappointing in recent years.

There is no doubt that the Portuguese manager is a proven winner throughout his career, but his recent spell at Tottenham was quite mediocre, and it remains to be seen whether Mourinho can recapture his winning formula.

The Italian side has a talented core of young players like Mancini, Kumbulla, Veretout, Villar, Pellegrini and Zaniolo at their disposal, and Mourinho will have to build his side around them.

The club hierarchy is keen on building a long term and consistent winning culture at Roma, and therefore they have turned to a proven winner like Jose Mourinho.

“We are thrilled and delighted to welcome José Mourinho into the AS Roma family,” club President Dan Friedkin and Vice-president Ryan Friedkin said.

“A great champion who has won trophies at every level, José will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project.

“The appointment of José is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.”

“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,” Mourinho said.

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me, and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job, and I cannot wait to start next season.

“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best, and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”

The club are delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with Jose Mourinho for him to become our new head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season. #ASRoma

Materazzi: "For us Inter fans, Mourinho joining Juve or Milan would have been worse. But joining Roma... I think the fans will understand for how much he gave us. Knowing Mourinho, he is at Roma to win it. Otherwise he would have stayed in London."
Antonio Conte to Le Iene: "I'll be staying or leaving Inter? Now we enjoy the celebrations, then we'll meet and decide. We will choose the best destiny for Inter. Mourinho returning to Italy is a great news: everything has been clarified, there's only respect between me and José".
