Ten biggest wins in UEFA Champions League history

Following are ten encounters in UEFA Champions League’s history, where the matches were decided by a huge margin.

Real Madrid vs Malmo (8-0) Group stage 2015

Los Blancos recorded the biggest win of the Champions League group stage in 2015/16 season, thrashing Swedish outfit Malmo 8-0. Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals while striker Karim Benzema bagged a hat-trick. Real Madrid would win the finals against rivals Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool vs Besiktas (8-0) Group stage 2007

Before Real Madrid, Liverpool had been the club with the biggest win in the group stage, beating Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas 8-0 in 2007. Yossi Benayoun was the hattrick hero while Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch also found the scoresheet.

Barcelona vs Celtic (7-0) Group stage 2016

Barcelona decimated Scottish champions Celtic in the 2016/17 season group stage to secure their biggest win in the competition’s history. It was another game where the trio of MSN combined, with the Argentine No.10 completing a hat-trick.

Juventus vs Olympiacos (7-0) Group stage 2003

Juventus had been the holder of the record for the biggest win in the group stage before Liverpool succeeded the Italian giants in 20017 – then followed by Real Madrid. Juve defeated Greek Champions Olympiacos 7-0, with Trezeguet, Del Piero finding the score sheet.

Valencia vs Genk (7-0) Group stage 2011

Valencia produced a memorable win in the Champions League 2011/12 season, beating Belgian club Genk 7-0 at Mestalla. Former Spanish international Roberto Soldado scored a hat-trick. 

Bayern Munich vs Basel (7-0) Round of 16 2012

Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern annihilated FC Basel in the round of 16 second leg when they were trailing by a goal in the aggregate. German striker netted four goals to help the Bavarians register the biggest win in the round of 16 of UCL.

Bayern Munich vs Shakhtar Donetsk (7-0) Round of 16 2015

The Bavarians went on to equal their own record for the biggest win in the round of 16, routing the Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 in 2015. Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski and Franck Ribery wound up in the scoring sheet.

Manchester City vs Schalke (7-0) round of 16 2019

Man City levelled with Bayern for the biggest win in the round of 16 after defeating Schalke in the 2018/19 season. With the aggregate score looking 3-2 after the first-leg, Pep Guardiola’s side decimated the Germans 7-0 at Etihad. Sergi Aguero and Raheem Sterling found the score sheet while Leroy Sane scored against his former club.

Manchester United vs As Roma (7-1) quarterfinals 2007

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side produced the biggest win in the UCL quarter finals history – Bayern would break in 2019 – against Roma in 2007. Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo were on target as the Red Devils won the tie 8-3 on aggregate

Bayern have had some of the biggest wins in UCL history and the trend continued last season as well. The Bavarians surprised Barcelona with an 8-2 win in the one-off tie in the quarter-finals. Bayern went on to lift the title, beating PSG in the finals.
