Top 5 favourites for the Ballon d’Or 2021

Top 5 favourites for the Ballon d'Or 2021 - Messi, Lewandowski, Jorginho, Kante, Kane.

Robert Lewandowski-Bayern Munich

The quest for the Ballon d’Or has heated up as the continental cups – Euro and Copa America – are approaching the business end. Here we take a look at the top five favourites for the Ballon d’Or 2021.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane enjoyed one of his prolific seasons in the Premier League, winning the Golden Boot award for scoring 24 goals while he also topped the assists chart (13 assists). However, the 27-year-old’s brilliance couldn’t save Tottenham from undergoing yet another lacklustre campaign. Nonetheless, Kane can still dream of achieving silverware with the England national team, who are two wins away from being crowned as Euro champions. Kane has been excellent in the knockout stages, scoring in back to back two games, and if he manages to have a similar impact in the remaining games, he would surely be a top favourite for the Ballon d’Or.

Jorginho

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has continued his excellent form at Euro 2020, playing a major role for Italy, who are currently in the semi-finals. Being the linchpin of the midfield, Jorginho led the Blues to the Champions League title and now is looking to do the same with the national side.

If Italy end up winning the European Championship, the 29-year-old will have two major silverware for both club and country. He will be in a great position to claim for the coveted award.

Robert Lewandowski

You can hardly find a striker who is as good as Robert Lewandowski in the 20/21 season. The Bayern Munich talisman racked up some astonishing numbers in the process, 41 goals in the Bundesliga and he was also bestowed with the European Golden Shoe award. However, the 32-year-old only managed to win the Bundesliga title while failing in Euros and the Champions League. In the European Championship, Lewandowski lacked support from his teammates as he managed to score three goals.

N’Golo Kante

Kante was the first name to be tipped for the Ballon d’Or award by the fans after his stunning performance in the Champions League final against Manchester City. The 30-year-old has perhaps been one of the best midfielders over the last two seasons but took his game to a higher level under Thomas Tuchel. He was expected to have a similar impact in the European Championship. However, France suffered a shock defeat against Switzerland in the round of 16.

Lionel Messi

The record holder of the Ballon d’Or award, Lionel Messi, has set his sights on lifting it for the seventh time. From the start of 2021, the Barcelona talisman’s numbers have been extraordinary on all fronts. He is looking even more dangerous as a player with the Argentine national team, having racked up 4 goals and 4 assists in Copa America thus far. If the Blaugrana ace goes on to win Copa America, it looks like there is no stopping him from collecting the Ballon d’Or award this year.
