Dortmund 1-1 Lazio: Immobile’s penalty cancels out Guerreiro’s first-half strike

Ciro Immobile-Lazio

The Italian side avoided their first defeat of the Champions League after Immobile’s second-half equaliser.

Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw by Lazio although the former has booked their place in the Champions League round of 16.

The two teams squared off at Signal Iduna Park, with Dortmund looking to settle the scores for their return leg defeat against the Serie A outfit.

It was Lazio who must have gained the lead around the half-hour mark hadn’t Franco Acerbi missed a simple chance to nudge the ball into the nets.

Soon, Lazio got paid for the mistake as the hosts opened the account at the stroke half time through Raphael Guerreiro’s strike. The goal was a well-worked one by Die Borussen, with Thorgan Hazard registering the assist.

Immobile tested Roman Burki with a solid strike in the second half before scoring the equaliser from the penalty spot.

The Italian striker has been on a roll since his return as Lazio had benefitted highly from his presence. He also didn’t fail to deliver against his former club today, scoring an important equaliser to maintain the Biancocelesti’s defeatless run in the Champions League this season.

However, Dortmund have sealed their place in the knockouts while Lazio have to wait until the final matchday of the group stage next week. The Serie A club are currently second in their respective group with nine points, with 2 wins and three draws thus far.

The biggest concern for Dortmund would be the hamstring injury for star striker Erling Haaland, who didn’t participate in the game. The Norwegian is expected to be sidelined for few of the upcoming fixtures.
