Politano’s second-half goal helps Napoli edge out Real Sociedad 1-0

Gennaro Gattuso-Napoli

Napoli have produced a narrow away win against the Spanish outfit.

Napoli squared off against Real Sociedad in the matchday 2 of Europa League at Anoeta.

The visitors had a good sight at the goal after the efforts from skipper Lorenzo Insigne and Hirving Lozano. Sociedad also looked threatening with their crosses into the box in the first half.

Napoli drew first blood after Matteo Politano’s long-range effort took a deflection before entering the nets. The Italian winger has now three goals to his name this season and been a valuable player to Gennaro Gattuso.

Sociedad’s biggest chance yet came soon after Napoli took the lead as Portu’s strike denied by David Ospina. The Neopolitan goalkeeper made a reflex save to prevent Sociedad from finding the equalizer. Kalidou Koulibaly also played a crucial role behind the win after a defensive masterclass.

Victor Osimhen was also shown a red card after the accumulation of two yellows. The Nigerian, who came off the bench around the hour mark, was sent off in the stoppage time for his foul on Robin Le Normand.

Napoli have registered their first win in Europa League following their shock loss against AZ Alkmaar last week.

Meanwhile, La Real’s impressive winning streak came to a halt after the narrow defeat against Partenopei.

Sociedad capped off the Europa League season with a win against Rijeka and it was followed up with a big victory against Huesca in La Liga.

Napoli are also off to a good start this season after some big wins in the league against Genoa and Atalanta.
