Newcastle Jets 1–0 Melbourne City: Yuel’s first-half strike clinches a narrow win

Valentino Yuel-Newcastle Jets

Valentino Yuel continued his fine goalscoring form to help Jets get a narrow win over Melbourne City.

Valentino Yuel scored the only goal in Newcastle Jets’ 1-0 win against Melbourne City.

City striker Jamie Maclaren had a promising chance to score early on in the game but his shot was saved by Jack Duncan.

Jets keeper Tom Glover has a similar situation at the other end, making a top save to deny Hoffman’s thunderous strike.

Yuel had a goal disallowed by VAR but it didn’t keep long from him finding the scoresheet as he provided the breakthrough for the hosts minutes before the half-time whistle. Thurgate’s header found the woodwork before Yuel clung on to the rebound. The 26-year-old has been impressive this season, scoring four goals in seven appearances.

Adrien Luna almost had a good sight at the equaliser after catching Jets on the break however he made a mess of it, much to City’s dismay.

Jets could have doubled their lead from a corner kick at the other end but Nigel Boogard directed his header wide.

Luda, who had previously missed a big chance, was presented with two more, with all of them going down the drain.

Jets, who snatched a late draw in their previous fixture against Western City wanderers, have secured their second win of the season and are slowly staring their resurgence.

Meanwhile, Patrick Kisnorbo’s side are yet to register their first win of the A-League this season.
