The former MLS executive has backed the idea of a merger between Major League Soccer and Mexican League.
Former MLS executive Ivan Gazidis has supported the idea of merging both Major League Soccer (USA) and Mexican top-flight Liga MX.
Gazidis has said that the merger could be a driver of interest given that both the leagues are the best in North America.
Gazidis said,”I’ve always thought that it needs to be looked at.”
“A league that encompasses North America, including Mexico, is something that would be a tremendous driver of interest.”
Gazidis, who is currently an executive of Serie A outfit Milan, was instrumental in the formation of MLS and also served as its deputy commissioner for quite some time.
Besides, both the leagues hold a great relationship following the creation of the Campeones Cup – happened as a result of their partnership established in 2018 – where the winners from the respective leagues compete in a four-way tournament.
Furthermore, an All-star match was also planned this summer before Pandemic hindered it.
MLS commissioner Don Garber said,
“MLS has more flexibility, probably because they don’t have the kind of history and established structures that exist in European football and that are so difficult to change.”
“Obviously the CONCACAF Champions League already exists, but this could be developed in different ways and the most extreme would be a merger of the leagues.”
Although there could be more partnership between MLS and Liga Mx in the future, suggested by both league’s chiefs, it remains to be seen whether a merger would happen.
