La Liga Origin
Founded in 1929, La Liga is the top tier of Spanish football, generally contested by 20 teams including European heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid.
La Liga format
During the formative years, La Liga consisted of 10 teams and the numbers have varied over the years before settling to 20 teams in 1997. La Liga also implements a promotion and relegation system, where the three bottom-placed clubs in the top flight will be relegated to Segunda Division – second tier. Top two teams of the Segunda division will earn promotion. Similar to Europe’s top leagues, La Liga would award three points for a win, no points for defeat and one point for a draw. The competition is a round-robin, with each team playing others in two legs (away and home) – 38 games.
La Liga Winners
Out of 69 teams that have played since the inception of the league, Real Madrid and Barcelona have been the dominant forces, with the former one winning the maximum number of titles – 36. Barca, who follow Madrid in the title count, have been highly successful since 1990 – winning 16 titles in the process out of their tally of 26. Atletico Madrid, who had thrived in early years, have won their recent title in the 2013/14 season.
