The Premier League, also known as English Premier League or EPL, is the highest tier of English football and was founded on February 20 1992. Prior to its formation, the teams contested in English Football League (EFL) – the oldest league in world football.
Format and teams
Much like all other leagues, the Premier League is based on promotion and relegation. Played by 20 teams, each of them will play others twice, say a total of 38 games, in the round-robin method. One match will be played at home and the other will be played at the away venue. If points are equal, goal difference and goals scored will be considered to decide the team’s position in the table.
The three lowest placed teams in the Premier League points table will be relegated to the Championship, the second-tier of English football. In the Championship – currently contested by 24 teams – three of them will earn promotion to the top-flight. Teams finishing first and second in the table will earn direct promotion while the final spot is up for the grab – decided by the playoffs.
Since the inception of the Premier League, only seven teams were able to win the title, with Manchester United winning the title 13 times – the highest of all teams. Chelsea are second with five titles while Manchester City and Arsenal have won four and three respectively. Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City and Liverpool have won it apiece, with the latter one being the defending champions.
Newly Promoted Teams
Leeds United, Fulham and West Brom are three teams which have been promoted in 2020.
Watford FC, Bournemouth FC and Norwich City were relegated to Championship these season.
